Intro to Digital Photography (DSLR and Mirrorless)

A 2-part photography workshop with Mandy Keathley

Wednesdays May 17th and 24th, 2023 - 5:30-7:30pm

Join Mandy in this beginner-focused Digital Photography class where we’ll discuss the fundamentals of digital photography, including proper exposure, lighting, and creative compositions. This course is perfect for anyone interested in being more of an artist with their camera and who wants to feel brave enough to be creative and experimental. You'll leave with a solid understanding of the technical and creative aspects of digital photography, and the skills to start exploring photography as an art form.

Session 1:  Understanding the Exposure Triangle - We’ll explore the basics of exposure, learning how to balance aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to achieve the perfect exposure for any situation. These tools are also the foundation for using a creative depth of field, capturing motion, and more.

Session 2: Creative Compositional Tools - We'll delve into composition, discussing the elements of design that make for visually compelling images that tell a story. There’s a big difference between a quick snapshot and a carefully composed image with a unique perspective.

There will be a slide lecture during session 1 to introduce the concepts, you will receive the slides as a PDF via email so you can keep it as a resource. You will be given a short assignment to practice during the week between the two sessions. During session 2, we will recap what we have learned in session 1, discuss any issues you had, and then focus on Composition during our photo walk.

In the future, if you have attended the intro series (or for those who have these skills), there will be intermediate and advanced classes on special topics like How to photograph Portraits, Special Lighting conditions, etc.

PLEASE NOTE:  You must bring your own DSLR or Mirrorless camera. Mandy highly recommend watching a YouTube tutorial beforehand to find the dials to change your Aperture, Shutter, and ISO. She will show you how to use them together for creative outcomes!
