Color 101 - Contrasts and Harmonies
A watercolor workshop with Monika Metzenthin
Wednesday April 5th, 2023 - 5.30pm - 7.30pm
Join us for this first in a series of color workshops. We will be reviewing the color wheel as a basic organizing system for painters and study the relationships of colors based on their location on the wheel. We will mix colors and find answers to common questions: What are primary, secondary, and tertiary colors? What are complementary colors? And why are they complementary? And why are they considered contrasting yet harmonious? What are split complementaries and why do they seem more interesting? And what happens when we mix complementaries? How do colors influence each other? Answering our questions we will be exploring select color harmonies in classic geometric designs.
Materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own paints. While we will be using watercolors for our mixing exercises the underlying principles can be applied to all materials. This might be a great opportunity to explore your own materials in a more systematic manner.
Your instructor will be Teaching Artist Monika Metzenthin who has been facilitating creative experiences for audiences of all ages in all media for over two decades. Monika is a color expert who studied color theory and wrote her doctoral thesis on color in industrial design. She has since taught a broad variety of color workshops spanning from basic color mixing to the physiological and psychological effects of color.
