How to Draw with Oil Pastels with Marijke

If you have ever wanted to create your own impressionist artwork but have been too intimidated to pick up a paint brush, oil pastels are a great place to start! Oil pastels have all of the convenience of a crayon with the benefits of oils! This art medium offers a tactile experience with a lot of smudging and sculpting of the colors along the way.

In this class, we will cover a few oil pastel techniques and start with a small warm up. Then, everyone will have the opportunity to create your own oil pastel work of art! Everyone is encouraged to bring their own reference image(s), but there will be references available.

Accompany us in experimenting with oil pastels and leave with your very own impressionist piece and some drawing techniques to add to your skill set.

This workshop is for ages 9+.

Designing and Carving LinoCut Stamps with Marijke

Join us and learn how to design and create your own set of stamps! These stamps can be used from mini prints, card making, to scrapbooking, to using them on any offcut you can find!

We will be focusing on creating 2-4 small designs and carving them out on a rubber linoleum block with carving tools by hand. This will challenge you to think of your design with inverted colors and you will learn how to use hand tools to carve the design yourself, line by line. Once complete, everyone will get the opportunity to print their designs with a variety of methods.

Join us in learning how to take an image you design and turn it into a stamp that will allow you to print it again and again.

Ages 13+

About the Instructor:

Marijke IJff began as the in-house art teacher and eventually also took on the role of the After School Arts Program Coordinator for C5 Studios Community Arts Center starting in 2023.

Hand-Building Ceramics with Bart Godett and Diane Hedding

In this workshop we will use basic hand-building ceramics techniques to build confidence in exploring clay and its properties. Participants will have the opportunity to make one or two (depending on complexity) fairly small pots, for example a mug or a bean pot or both. You will hand-build your creation and it will be glazed for you, creating a finished ceramic piece of your own design.

All materials and equipment needed will be provided, however if you have your own clay tools you are more than welcome to bring them. This class will focus on learning about clay properties, texture, and pot creation. Finished glazed pots will be available to collect from C5 Studios 2 weeks after the class, allowing time for the work to be fired and glazed.

The cost of this workshop is inclusive of a materials fee of $10 per participant to cover the cost of the specialist materials required.

This workshop is for ages 15+.

This class is limited to 8 places.

About the Instructors:
Bart is a ceramics artist and educator that lives in Big Pine. Bart is originally from Ridgecrest and has lived in the Owens Valley for 35 years. He has a studio at his house where he has worked on pottery from very large to quite small pots. His latests interest involve heavily textured clay typically in non- round forms experimenting in shape and functionality. He has enjoyed sharing his "odd" pottery style in workshops up and down the valley. I was drawn to ceramics at 19 my first semester in college. As he has moved from place to place, he has been able to enjoy expanding his ceramics education in Lancaster, Bakersfield, Lone Pine, Incline Village. At first it was all about throwing pots on a wheel, from tiny to large. Now he enjoys his creativity while camping in the wilderness. Nature inspires.

Diane Hedding has enjoyed creating in clay for over 10 years.  She has an Associates of Arts degree and spent three plus years teaching a community ceramics class at Cerro Coso college in Bishop.  Prior to relocation to Bishop five years ago she worked as a lab assistant in the ceramics program at the local parks and recreation department.  She is also a juried member of the Ventura County Potters Guild.

Linoleum Stamp Making & Wilderness with Jessie Sheldon

Join us in an artistic ode to the unique ecosystems of the Sierra! In this class, we will explore the breadth of species that reside in the wilderness areas surrounding Bishop through stamp-making.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to create mini stamps of species found in the surrounding wilderness areas from mountain yellow-legged frogs to California golden trout. What is wilderness? What role does biodiversity play in wilderness? Or what on earth is abronia alpina? We will dive into these questions and more while gaining technical printmaking skills.

Our collective prints will come together as a collaborative stamp collage, representative of the complex ecosystems within the Sierra. Participants can take their stamps home to print more of these wild species onto love letters, grocery lists, important paperwork, and more.

Ages 13+

About the Instructor:

Jessie Sheldon was the 2024 Voices of the Wilderness Artist in Residence in Alaska's Nellie Juan-College Fiord Wilderness Study Area, hosted by Chugach National Forest. In this residency, she got to ponder the relationship between wilderness and art for weeks on end while working alongside wilderness managers. This may have included picking up a lot of slugs.

Jessie is passionate about the confluence of art and the environment, and how each field has the ability to enhance the other.

Her biggest art piece to date can be found in Lone Pine in the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center, in a mural celebrating the unique landscapes and ecosystems surrounding the Owens Valley.

Jessie finds joy carving prints, ice skating on frozen lakes, bushwhacking, and swimming in cold water.

Join this class and learn how to turn a stack of paper into a piece of home decor that adds a rich, textural element to any space.

This class will begin with everyone prepping their materials and choosing the relative size of their vessel by determining the base. Then, we will start to build our shape from the bottom up, weaving in a spiral pattern.

Come to this workshop for a relaxing evening of repurposing materials and honoring our trash!

About the Instructor:

Marijke IJff began as the in-house art teacher and eventually also took on the role of the After School Arts Program Coordinator for C5 Studios Community Arts Center starting in 2023.

She cultivated her passion for art and craft from a very young age and became part of the inaugural chapter of the National Art Honor Society as a senior at her high school.  Marijke has volunteered and worked with both the Inyo Council for the Arts as well as the Mono Arts Council from 2016 - 2019 intermittently.

Claiming her favorite hobby is learning new hobbies, she has a deep focus on upcycling and using the materials at her disposal.

As an instructor, Marijke's goal is to create an environment for everyone to express themselves in a way that feels right for them. She highly encourages curiosity and believes it is where we discover the most.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED!

Due to concerns about the unstable air quality and smoke, we are rescheduling this event for a date that will support higher levels of participation and happier lungs during the class.

This fundraiser event will now be held on Friday, October 10th. We hope to see you then!

As many of you know, C5 Studios’ beloved Line Dancing teacher Olivia Gilpin’s son Jamie was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. While Olivia and her family are out of town so that Jamie can receive the care he needs we want to let them know we are thinking about them and support them in every way that we can. Join host Margy Verba for a joyful night of Line Dancing, while raising funds to support Olivia and her family.

No advance registration necessary, just show up ready to make a donation. Donations start at $25, but feel free to donate more! We strongly encourage donations in the form of cash or checks (made out to C5 Studios)

All proceeds go to Olivia and family.

Make Your Own Tunnel Book - A 3D Diorama workshop with Marijke

Join this class to create your own mini diorama filled with your art! We will be walking through how to create a tunnel book and then everyone will get the chance to develop their own little world to put inside of their tunnel books.

These 3D artworks date back to the mid 18th century and were originally inspired by extravagant theater sets.

In this class, we will be drawing, collaging, and cutting to create the imagery within our mini ‘sets.’ This project does involve using X-acto knives to cut out intricate details to create the windows between your panels.

Take part in this class and leave with your own scene, displayed in a dynamic, three dimensional design. This experience is a way to deepen your understanding of layers, depth, perspective, and to have fun shaping and building your own microcosm!

Ages 13+

Salsa Dance Classes with Hallie

Welcome to Salsa in the Eastern Sierra! We will be offering Salsa classes that are open to all skill levels- beginners embraced, drop-ins are welcome. Bring a partner or come solo and we’ll partner-up! We will start with very basic movements which will be refined and polished with styling cues as we advance.  Each class will have a review of prior skills and a portion of the class will be dedicated to progression and combinations as folks become more comfortable with the movement.

Salsa dancing is FUN, anyone can do it with the right tricks and tools.  Your teacher is there to guide you into a hip-swiveling, smile-bringing… expression of mind, body and soul.

About your instructor:

Hallie Vickers moved to Bishop 25 years ago with a love for rock climbing and the mountains.  Several years later she moved to Santa Barbara to pursue a nursing degree… it was in Santa Barbara that she immersed herself in Salsa dancing, ultimately dancing and performing with a local Latin dance company, Salsa Barbara.  Upon returning to Bishop to settle down, she brought that love of Salsa home with her, teaching Salsa classes and fusion dance classes for many years prior to diving into family life and embracing a career as a RN Care Coordinator. She shares her journey with her handsome hubby, Simon and two fabulous boys, Shiloh and Lee. She’d love to hear from you if you have any questions 760-920-2063.
