Drawing Fundamentals Session 3 - Large Format Charcoal Drawing with Naomi

Drawing Fundamentals is a series of classes focused entirely around DRAWING! Throughout our monthly Drawing Fundamentals series, we will guide participants through a range of exercises and activities that will explore drawing through various approaches and perspectives, develop your drawing skills and encourage you to investigate different ways that drawing can express our observations, ideas and emotions.

Session 3: Large Format Charcoal Drawing!

Sometimes it just takes a change of perspective to see things differently. Join us for an exploration of the creative possibilities of using charcoal to draw LARGE, exciting drawings of things we tend to perceive as small, perhaps even insignificant. We will play with using raw charcoal, willow charcoal and compressed charcoal to sketch, build tonal range and create a large-scale, finished drawing that uses a unique or magnified perspective to explore an object in a new way.

We will work from first-hand observation and we will aim to connect with images, objects and even experiences through drawing exercises and celebrate them in a large, finished piece. You are welcome to bring object or images that you are drawn to or would like to work from, or choose from the range of objects and images supplied.

Parent/Family/Community Support Session with Erin

These sessions will seek to offer a unique community support for parents and families that want to expand their perspectives and understanding about parenting, human development, caring for and mentoring children and teens.

While there are many joys in being a parent, there are also many challenges. We will create a safe space to talk about these challenges, as well as offer advice and strategies for being responsive to your child/children’s needs.

We will discuss challenging behaviors, children experiencing anxiety/disengagement, risky play and development, the social and academic trials of being a student and children and technology.

This is a confidential, judgment-free zone where experiences and resources are shared. Participants can learn from one another and from the facilitator through storytelling, research-based information and experience.

Parent support groups create a greater sense of belonging, cultivate deeper connections between partners, give us hope and humor in the face of frustration and desperation, and help individuals build skills and find time for self-care.

Facilitator: Erin Dews has 28 years of experience as an educator and director for early childhood programs, child development programs, parent support programs, mentoring teachers at SBCC and in forest school trainings. She has worked as a CASA volunteer, a naturalist mentor and fosters nature connection and the arts as a path to family health and healing. She was the director of Wild Roots Forest School Eastern Sierra for 9 years and is currently the co-executive director at C5 Studios Community Arts Center and at the Academy of Forest Kindergarten Teachers.

Hand Coiling Paper Coasters with Marijke

Come to this class and learn how to create beauty from any old, untouched magazines lying around! Art is often inspired by the materials we have around us and it is the honor of the artist to have ‘the vision’ and see the potential of a material or item past what may meet the eye.

In this class, we will be using old magazines and rolling techniques to create shapes and push the material to a higher potential. After learning the basic building techniques, everyone will get the opportunity to design and create their own set of inventive coasters or creative hand coiled art.

Join us for an evening of reimagining old magazines into tangible, 3D shapes. Leave with the ability to see past the materials you are working with and reinvent them into something new.

Creative Tap - Surrealist Parlor Games with Naomi

Did you know that some of the most recognized and celebrated Surrealist artists spent their free time together playing art games in the dark bars and street cafes of Paris in the 1920's?  Artists like Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia and Man Ray knew that getting playful with their art while spending time with their friends was a GREAT way to support their creativity!

At Taphouse on may 31st we'll do our best to re-create the vibe of 1920's Paris right here in Bishop, giving ourselves permission to play, create and collaborate together!  Through games such as such as "Cadavre Exquis" (Exquisite Corpse) we will explore how some of the legends of Surrealism found inspiration for their incredible ideas.  French berets, wine drinking and 1920's style clothing are welcome, but not required!  Come tend your creativity through PLAY!

Challenge your perspective and train your brain to reimagine images to become more than they are. This class is all about letting loose and experimenting with mixing materials! It can be easy to get stuck in the same art forms we are comfortable with (or to push off starting something new) and become stagnant in our perspectives.

In this class, participants will be presented with and able to experiment with techniques from watercolors, to stamps, to paint application, and collage, just to name a few! Once the class has been warmed up and introduced to all of the mediums, everyone will have the opportunity to create their own piece of mixed media art.

This is an art form that is incredibly relaxing and rule free. All skill levels are encouraged to attend! Join this class for an evening of creative indulgence and expand your viewpoint for art!

How to Hand Braid Mats with Marijke

Join this class to learn how to upcycle all of those old t-shirts that either don’t fit, have a little stain on them, or suffer from a tiny hole. Fret no further, no need to send it to a landfill.

With Earth Day being in April, this is the third and final class in a series of 3 that is focusing on utilizing upcycled materials and their different applications.

In this class, everyone will learn how to process old t-shirts into t-shirt yarn and create an aesthetic mat. All participants are highly encouraged to bring 3-6 old t-shirts they may be needing to clear from their closet, but there will be some provided as well.

Once everyone understands how to process their shirts, they will learn how to braid and simultaneously weave a mat. This is a project that can be as small or as large as you would like to create it. The end result is a squishy mat that feels wonderful under your feet, could protect your table from a hot pan, or could even hang on your wall.

Crafted from excess material into a charming textile.

Attend this class for an enjoyable evening of upcycling and transforming trash into treasure!

Irrigation Techniques and Seed Starting

Continuing in the no-dig, regenerative gardening vein, this third class we will start with the benefits and savings of growing your own veggie plants from seed. We will also discuss inoculating seeds for better growth and the art of planting them out. Additionally we will look at the difference in direct seeding vs. growing for transplanting and seasonal strategies for maximizing a four season garden.

In the second part of the class we will be learning about irrigation, both overhead and drip. The goal is to be comfortable walking away from your garden during vacation and not worry about it. We will discuss timers, filters, watering schedules, cooling off plants on hot summer days, and more. In the lab we will build a drip system from hose bib to the end of the drip line, to take some of the mystery out of building a solid drip system that lasts for years.

Half the class will be at C5 Studios and then we will move on over to the lab for the other half. Snacks from the garden will be served.
