To launch our brand new C5 Studios Speaker Series, C5 Studios proudly presents:

The Meaning of Mountains; the past and future significance of the Sierra Nevada

A presentation by Obi Kaufmann followed by a book signing

Friday, March 25th at 5.30pm - THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT

Obi Kaufmann, best-selling author of The California Field Atlas, brings his work to the C5 Studios Community Arts Center in Bishop on Friday, March 25th for a wide-ranging, and artistic presentation that will explore a deep-time, ecological and philosophical perspective of California’s superlative mountain range, the Sierra Nevada.

It is Obi’s contention that so many challenges facing California find opportunities for successful resolution inside the story of the Sierra Nevada mountains, an overwhelmingly influential force on all of the state’s ecology in the human and the more-than-human world. By understanding the geophysical patterns evident, including the adaptive cycles of climate, fire, water, and soil, we begin to find deeper truths about ourselves and about how we can be more aligned with this place towards a resilient future.

Obi's at-once practical and yet hopeful, solution-based message is based on realistic applications of ecological theories and historical predictions and offers a welcome antidote to the despair offered so often by both the contemporary media and our current, political environment. Obi will be addressing the profound changes that California's living landscape has undergone and continues to go through and what that means for biodiversity and humanity across the Sierra Nevada and beyond. Perhaps more importantly, Obi's ideas of multidisciplinary ecology, restoration theory and geographic literacy point to a new era of conservation, one that we can usher in together.

About Obi Kaufman:

In the field atlases of Obi Kaufmann, science and art blend to illuminate the multifaceted array of California’s natural world, forming a uniquely elemental narrative based on the shaping forces of earth, air, fire, and water, connecting systems like no other series of books has done before. For poet, painter and naturalist Obi Kaufmann, California is a magic network of living systems that connect in a grand quilt of both ecology and beauty, holding enough science, mythology and language for a hundred field atlases to come.

An avid conservationist, Obi Kaufmann regularly travels around the state, presenting his work and vision to such groups as the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildland center, the Mojave Desert Land Trust, the Mechanics Institute of San Francisco, the Anza Borrego Foundation, the Mono Lake Committee, the University of California at Berkeley Botanical Garden, the University of California at Davis Plant Sciences Department, the University of California Santa Barbara Department of Water Sciences, the Peninsula Open Space Trust, the California Native Plant Society, the Wilderness Society and the Audubon Society.
