How to Hand Braid Mats

A crafting workshop with Marijke IJff

Wednesday May 1st, 2024 - 5:30pm-7:30pm

Join this class to learn how to upcycle all of those old t-shirts that either don’t fit, have a little stain on them, or suffer from a tiny hole. Fret no further, no need to send it to a landfill.

With Earth Day being in April, this is the third and final class in a series of 3 that is focusing on utilizing upcycled materials and their different applications.

In this class, everyone will learn how to process old t-shirts into t-shirt yarn and create an aesthetic mat. All participants are highly encouraged to bring 3-6 old t-shirts they may be needing to clear from their closet, but there will be some provided as well.

Once everyone understands how to process their shirts, they will learn how to braid and simultaneously weave a mat. This is a project that can be as small or as large as you would like to create it. The end result is a squishy mat that feels wonderful under your feet, could protect your table from a hot pan, or could even hang on your wall.

Crafted from excess material into a charming textile.

Attend this class for an enjoyable evening of upcycling and transforming trash into treasure!

This workshop is for ages 11+.

LINE DANCING for all levels!

Line Dancing workshops with Olivia Pearl

Fridays: 5/3/24, 5/10/24, 5/17/24, and 5/31/24 - 6.30pm - 8pm

(There will NOT be Line Dancing on 5/24/24)

Join Olivia for a series of a line dance class for everybody - beginners, intermediate levels and everything in-between! All ages, all bodies, adults and kids are all invited to come and dance. In these line dance classes you will learn and practice line dancing to country music, pop and more for a fun, modern twist on the genre! We will begin with the basics and learn a new dance every week, so you can be a regular and come every week or just drop in when you can! We will break down the steps of the dance and go at a speed that is comfortable with everybody.

The best part about line dance is you can take a basic dance and add whatever flare and sass you want to… or just keep it simple. I will be posting and sharing what dances we will cover for those who want extra homework or want to just get a head start on learning.

These classes are for adults and kids ages 7+.

About the instructor:

“Hi! My name is Olivia Gilpin and I moved to Bishop back in May 2022 from Seattle WA. I met my husband in Seattle and he grew up in Bishop. When I first visited Bishop I absolutely fell in love. The people, the outdoors, the sun and the country. The only thing I believe Bishop needs is some Line Dancing!

Back in Seattle I was apart of a line dance team called the Boot Boogie Babes for about 3 years. We taught line dance classes for both adult and children, opened for country artists, performed at the local fair and the solstice parade. I love to dance. It helps so much with my health both physically and mentally.”

Sessions cost $15/$20/$25 per session. This reflects our sliding scale payment structure - please pay the amount that feels best to you and your financial needs.

There is no advance registration required for these sessions - please come ready to pay in person before the class starts.

Exploring the Layers of Mixed Media

A mixed media workshop with Marijke IJff

Wednesday May 8th, 2024 - 5:30pm-7:30pm

Challenge your perspective and train your brain to reimagine images to become more than they are. This class is all about letting loose and experimenting with mixing materials! It can be easy to get stuck in the same art forms we are comfortable with (or to push off starting something new) and become stagnant in our perspectives.

In this class, participants will be presented with and able to experiment with techniques from watercolors, to stamps, to paint application, and collage, just to name a few! Once the class has been warmed up and introduced to all of the mediums, everyone will have the opportunity to create their own piece of mixed media art.

This is an art form that is incredibly relaxing and rule free. All skill levels are encouraged to attend! Join this class for an evening of creative indulgence and expand your viewpoint for art!

This workshop is for ages 9+.

Parent/Family/Community Support Sessions

Support sessions with Erin Dews

Thursdays, 4/18/24, 4/25/24, 5/9/24, 5/16/24 - 5:30pm-7:30pm

These sessions will seek to offer a unique community support for parents and families that want to expand their perspectives and understanding about parenting, human development, caring for and mentoring children and teens.

While there are many joys in being a parent, there are also many challenges. We will create a safe space to talk about these challenges, as well as offer advice and strategies for being responsive to your child/children’s needs.

We will discuss challenging behaviors, children experiencing anxiety/disengagement, risky play and development, the social and academic trials of being a student and children and technology.

This is a confidential, judgment-free zone where experiences and resources are shared. Participants can learn from one another and from the facilitator through storytelling, research-based information and experience.

Parent support groups create a greater sense of belonging, cultivate deeper connections between partners, give us hope and humor in the face of frustration and desperation, and help individuals build skills and find time for self-care.

Facilitator: Erin Dews has 28 years of experience as an educator and director for early childhood programs, child development programs, parent support programs, mentoring teachers at SBCC and in forest school trainings. She has worked as a CASA volunteer, a naturalist mentor and fosters nature connection and the arts as a path to family health and healing. She was the director of Wild Roots Forest School Eastern Sierra for 9 years and is currently the co-executive director at C5 Studios Community Arts Center and at the Academy of Forest Kindergarten Teachers.

Hand Coiling Paper Coasters

A crafting workshop with Marijke IJff

Wednesday, May 29th, 2024 - 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Come to this class and learn how to create beauty from any old, untouched magazines lying around! Art is often inspired by the materials we have around us and it is the honor of the artist to have ‘the vision’ and see the potential of a material or item past what may meet the eye.

In this class, we will be using old magazines and rolling techniques to create shapes and push the material to a higher potential. After learning the basic building techniques, everyone will get the opportunity to design and create their own set of inventive coasters or creative hand coiled art.

Join us for an evening of reimagining old magazines into tangible, 3D shapes. Leave with the ability to see past the materials you are working with and reinvent them into something new.

This workshop is for ages 9+.

Drawing Fundamentals - A Monthly Series of Drawing Classes

Session 4: Charcoal with Marijke IJff

Wednesday, June 12th, 2024 - 5:30pm - 7:30pm

C5 Studios is launching a new series of classes focused entirely around DRAWING! Throughout our monthly Drawing Fundamentals series, we will guide participants through a range of exercises and activities that will explore drawing through various approaches and perspectives, develop your drawing skills and encourage you to investigate different ways that drawing can express our observations, ideas and emotions.

During each class of the series, participants will be guided through valuable short and engaging “warm-up” drawing activities that build confidence and help artists to loosen up and lean in to expressive possibilities of the drawing experience. Each class in the series will focus on a different drawing skill or approach and will provide participants the opportunity to experiment and also time to create a more developed drawing.

We will explore elements of art such as line, shape, form, pattern, texture, tone and color, exploring the effect of using these elements in a variety of ways to create unique works of art. We will look at inspiring examples of how other artists have used different ideas, techniques and materials to make their art and experiment with a wide range of different art-making techniques. Techniques used may include mark-making with pencil, charcoal, pastel, monotype print-making and ink.

This is a series of classes with each class both building on the previous class AND accessible as a stand alone session.

Session 3: Charcoal

This is class number 4 in this series of 6 classes focusing on some of the fundamentals of drawing. Join this class to have a lively, messy charcoal experience!

In this class, we will be focusing on drawing with charcoal and capturing the essence of your subject through shape and shading. After we review some charcoal drawing techniques as a class, we will each practice by completing our own pieces. Photo references of animals will be provided, but everyone is encouraged to bring their own reference image if they would like!

While charcoal may seem intimidating to some, it can be an incredibly freeing way of drawing. You are able to make your final work as sketchy or photo realistic as you would like, you are the artist!

This workshop is for ages 9+.
